Philanthropitch Austin Hosts Record-Breaking Social Impact Competition
Raises Over $200,000 for Innovative Charities In Austin!
On May 8th Austin’s social impact community convened at the LBJ Auditorium for the fifth annual Philanthropitch Austin presented by Google, the social innovation fast pitch competition scaling sustainable nonprofits. Co-hosts Lisa Graham, Cofounder of Notley the producers of Philanthropitch, and Gerardo Interiano, Head of External Affairs at Google, kicked off the night’s festivities welcoming an audience of over 650 to the unique social impact celebration.
Last night’s event raised a record-breaking amount - over $200,000 - for Austin area nonprofits.
Seven local nonprofits took the stage for a 3-minute pitch meant to inform the judges and audience of their innovative, caused-based solutions. Presenting nonprofits included Generation Citizen, College Forward, VentureLab, Thinkery, Code2College, half Helen Foundation, and AIDS Services of Austin.
Chelsea Elliott from half Helen Foundation took home the greatest total award amount of the night, raising over $64,000! Funds raised during Philanthropitch will go toward launching half Helen’s C-MORE platform, an innovative new care solution for improving undiagnosed vision and hearing impairments for children.
The event’s all-star panel of judges featured Leon Chen, Gay Gaddis, Kendra Scott, Clayton Christopher, Mellie Price, and Jag Bath. Each judge asked insightful questions on the nonprofits plans to maximize impact, educating the audience on what it means to scale and sustain positive change in our community.
To kick off the event, VIP patrons were treated to a reception including an early preview of the participating charities, plus a Kendra Scott Color Bar with a portion of proceeds going to the evening’s Audience Awards.
Throughout the show, audience members and judges alike were informed of causes ranging from the need to increase youth entrepreneurship and underrepresented groups in technical careers, to empowering our youth to be more active participants in our democracy and paving the way for an HIV free generation.
During intermission, attendees were invited to participate in the Audience Awards via Modern Giving, a mobile giving platform powered by Pinkaloo Technologies. In collaboration with Austin Community Foundation, Modern Giving offered a new way for audience members to engage and give back while watching in real-time as Philanthropitch finalists reached their donation goals.
Supporting social impact in the Austin community was at an all-time high. Philanthropitch debuted the Friends of Philanthropitch program -- a new annual giving network of individual supporters helping increase the impact of effective nonprofits nationwide. With events and growing communities in Austin, San Antonio, Atlanta, and soon Columbus, Friends of Philanthropitch is a fun and meaningful way to spread your impact nationwide.
Partners including United Way for Greater Austinand St. David’s Foundation put on their own show of support for social innovation. United Way for Greater Austin awarded $35,000 to Thinkery, the winner of their Click for the Cause contest. The first Philanthropitch Health Track awards powered by St. David’s Foundation went to AIDS Services of Austin ($20,000) and half Helen Foundation ($30,000).
Culminating in a celebratory awards ceremony, corporate supporters including ARK Financial, BB&T, Alamo Drafthouse, Kendra Scott, and Legacy Collective each awarded their chosen nonprofit a corporate gift ranging from $5,000 to $10,000.
